Strengthening Care from the Ground Up
Despite efforts to improve healthcare in Kaduna State, underserved communities continue to face access to care and quality of care challenges to basic healthcare negating the Universal Health Coverage goal which addresses health inequity. Limited community participation and weak civic engagement hinder accountability from health providers and responsiveness from the community. Many of these underserved communities in the metropolitan area of Kaduna State lack platforms to voice their community needs, health priorities, and proper channels of feedback in service delivery or the health workforce servicing these communities.
KCDF aims to increase civic engagement in health decision-making, strengthen collaboration between health providers and underserved communities, and improve health outcomes through community-led initiatives.
Explore Project COPE’s approach to addressing this problem identified which include the following:
- Enhancing Community Participation and Civic Engagement: Project COPE aims to address limited community participation and weak civic engagement in Kaduna State's health system. By empowering communities to engage with health providers, the project seeks to improve accountability and responsiveness, which are currently lacking and contribute to poor health outcomes.
- Targeting Underserved Communities and Health Facilities: The project specifically focuses on underserved communities in the metropolitan area of Kaduna State, targeting both the communities and the primary health care (PHC) facilities that serve them. This ensures that interventions are directed where the need is greatest and can have the most impact.
- Structured Methodology for Sustainable Impact: Project COPE employs a phased approach: conducting community assessments and stakeholder mapping, establishing or strengthening community health committees, facilitating dialogue sessions, and supporting community-led health initiatives. This structured methodology is designed to build local capacity and foster sustained improvements.
- Collaboration and Partnerships: The project emphasizes collaboration between communities, health providers, local government agencies, and technical partners. It seeks to align with existing health initiatives and government priorities, and calls for partnerships with NGOs, the private sector, and international funders to ensure sustainability and scalability.
- Focus on Sustainability and Community Partnership: Project COPE plans for long-term sustainability by integrating with government health plans, building the capacity of community health committees, and documenting lessons learned for potential scaling to other areas. Community ownership is central to the project's strategy, ensuring that improvements are maintained beyond the project's initial implementation.

Community Trust and Safety
Neighborhood safety relies on mutual trust, open dialogue, and constructive police-community relations.
KCDF is creating collaborative spaces for residents and local law enforcement to build understanding, prevent crime or fear of crime and terror, and ensure justice.

Focus Area Three · Urban Sustainability
Kada Livability
The Kaduna State urban system is grappling with severe environmental pressure due to urbanisation and the attendant population growth compromising the health and wellbeing of its residents. The rapid pace of urbanisation is worsening these identified issues, putting a strain on existing infrastructure and escalation of pollution levels.
KCDF aims to enhance environmental sustainability and resilience in six inner city areas chosen out of three LGAs in the Kaduna metropolitan area and empower communities in these inner cities to lead sustainability initiatives and manage urban resources.

The Green Cities, Empowered Communities initiative draws up activities such as community-led waste management, urban greening, and sustainability training to address this problem in target inner cities in Kaduna State by empowering these communities to own sustainability initiatives, create environmentally resilient communities and enhance community-led management of available urban resource.
